El Loco is one of Merivale’s exciting restaurants, with a recent pop up stint at the Sydney Opera House making it all the more popular!
I decided to organise bday drinks for my 24th here as I’d been wanting to try it out for a while and had heard it was quite reasonably priced and close to Central station.
We got there at 6.00pm and found that there were no seats available in the restaurant at all! We ended up sitting at the Excelsior although we were still able to order food from El Loco, which was good! Moral of the story: if you want a seat in the restaurant, be early!
The atmosphere here is great. El Loco is so popular that, despite the crappy rainy day, there was still a huge crowd there. There was good music too although it was a little bit loud and I found myself screaming at my friends in order to be heard over the music.
There wasn’t too much service involved as the staff were extremely busy and, although pleasant, didn’t interact with us much at all.
I decided to order the prawn tacos (which came with a recommendation from MDS), and the hot dog. I also tried some of MDS’ corn chips with salsa and guacamole.
The prawn tacos ($5.00) were absolutely delicious. It was a soft taco with prawns, cheese and some spicy sauce. Although it was very messy and dripped everywhere, it was so delicious and I really enjoyed the spicy sauce.
The hot dog was quite large, which was good considering it cost $9.00! It was topped with mustard, jalapenos, and cheese. I wasn’t really a fan of the mustard and cheese combination as I thought it was too much creaminess for a hot dog. I would have preferred no mustard OR alternatively, no cheese. I ended up pushing off half of the cheese and then managed to eat about 2/3 of the hot dog.
MDS’ corn chips were nice. The chips were nothing special, the same as Dorito’s Original, but the guacamole was lemony and cold- very cooling. The salsa was nice too and tasted like the topping put on bruschetta. Quite a nice little side for only $5.00.
Overall the food was quite nice, but I probably won’t be ordering the hot dog again! I would like to try the burgers or maybe a chicken or pork taco next time.
Overall I would rate my dining experience (out of 10):
- Service- 5
- Food- 6.5
- Ambience- 7.5
- Value – 6
