We returned again to Chat Thai to welcome some New Zealander friends to Sydney.
This time the restaurant was much busier as it was at full capacity. Luckily we had made a booking so were soon seated at a small round table.
Service was quite bad on this occasion.
The waitress didn’t seem to speak English very well and there were a few stuff ups.
They forgot an extra rice we had ordered, brought my salad out quite late, and completely forgot about one person’s salad and another’s entree. She had to go and ask the waitress for it and by the time it came out, everyone else had finished eating (we didn’t notice that her food hadn’t come out until after we started).
To top it all off, one of our New Zealander friends was given chilli sauce when she asked for salt…maybe it was their accent?
- Red chicken curry with apple eggplants, kaffir lime leaves and basil ($16.00)
- Green chicken curry with apple eggplants, kaffir lime leaves and basil ($16.00) x 2
See here for my review on the green chicken curry.
- Massamun beef curry ($16.00)
My friend said this dish was nice but had too many potatoes and could have done with more beef.
- Chargrilled prawns with fresh chilli and garlic relish ($22.00)
MC ordered these prawns. They were absolutely enormous but there were only four of them and they were slightly burnt.
The sauce on the side was VERY VERY hot and although he tried a bit of it drizzled over his rice, it did become quite spicy. I tried a little and enjoyed the delicious king prawns but found the sauce too hot to handle.
- Poached chicken, prawns and banana blossom salad with smoked chilli jam and cashew nuts ($24.00)
This was my dish. I was so happy with presentation, the dish looked colourful and pretty.
Although there were only two prawns, there was a decent amount of chicken. The combination of chicken, nuts, banana blossom (the flower of the banana tree), mint, and seafood gave the dish a nice crunch. However, towards the end the dish got more and more salty due to the sauce/dressing and I couldn’t eat any more.
This dish would have been improved with a few more prawns and a lot less sauce or less salt in the sauce.
- Stir fried chicken with cashew nuts and smoked chilli jam ($15.00)
MDS ordered this dish and I tried a bit of it. I enjoyed it, being a fan of cashew chicken dishes. It wasn’t too spicy and the portion was quite good.
The only negative would be that MDS thought it was too salty. Otherwise, a nice dish.
- Green papaya salad ($12.00)
This was the dish that came out late. It was a pretty dish and looked interesting but such poor service is unfortunate and really ruins the experience.
- 6 x steamed jasmine rice
Good sized portions of rice charged per bowl.
- Bulmer’s cider- we ordered the 500mL pear cider on the menu but was told there was no pear, and got a 330mL apple cider instead
The bill came to $212.00 for the 8 of us. At first they added the entree to the bill even though we never received it. Once we told them of the error they quickly fixed it up for us.
Overall I would rate my dining experience (out of 10):
- Service- 4
- Food- 4.5
- Ambience- 7
- Value – 6
A few unfortunate incidents which led to Chat Thai being given a lower rating on this occasion. Perhaps they struggle to cope with the full house at dinner time?
It will be interesting to see how it goes if I return there again.
