An impromptu visit to the city led me to meet up with my mum and MC for lunch. I was really in the mood for Thai and, having been to Chat Thai once before, I knew it was a great place for it. Although it was pretty busy, we were seated quite quickly. The atmosphere is cosy and dark. The brick walls and artsy paintings give the restaurant a grungy look and the metal cups and a kitchen that is visible from the dining area, make the experience feel a little more authentic.
We ordered a grilled pork skewer, satay chicken skewer and grilled pork ball dumpling entree.
While I loved the peanutty chicken skewer and caramelly grilled pork, I wasn’t a big fan of the pork ball dumplings (on the left of the photo) as I found them quite tough and flavourless.
MC ordered fried pork in garlic, onion and coriander with rice. I tried some of the dish and really enjoyed it and MC loved it as well, polishing off the whole thing.
I ordered a green chicken curry with apple eggplants, kaffir lime leaves, and basil, a traditional Thai dish and the best way to test a restaurant’s Thai food. The curry was slightly spicy, amazingly fragrant and creamy, and absolutely delicious. This dish is always a favourite with me -in fact I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it- and Chat Thai’s version is a definite winner.
Mum originally ordered the steamed blue eye cod in red curry paste wrapped in banana leaves. When it came out it didn’t look like what was described on the menu (see below). It was definitely not steamed cod in banana leaves, it was more like a fish cake, and we were not too happy with it, so sent it back and ordered something else.
Service was great and the manager was happy to change our order for us. He recommended the fried wide rice noodles (which we ordered with beef). This dish was spicy, hot and moreish. The vegetables were still crunchy and the beef was nice and char-grilled. A fantastic noodle dish.
Overall a great experience which we really enjoyed. I would definitely go there again as the food is good and cheap, service is great and the atmosphere is nice too.
All this came to under $60. Great value and delicious food.
Overall I would rate my dining experience (out of 10):
- Service- 6.5
- Food- 7.75
- Ambience- 6
- Value – 8.5
